The day Ritchie moved me into Egret’s Lof, I thought that was it, I was done for.

When Madeline Delarouse’s children, Richie and Eliza, convince her to move into Egret’s Loft, a posh Florida retirement community, she is convinced that her life there will be nothing but boredom and monotony. She couldn’t possible have been more wrong.

After only a few days of residence, Madeline has made friends and enemies, gotten herself involved in a murder investigation, taken on more senior activities than she ever knew existed, been asked on several dates, and seen more of her adult children than ever before, as Richie and Eliza realise that their mother is deeply involved in snooping and absolutely not going to stop no matter what they say.

And much to Madeline’s own surprise, she finds herself highly entertained as she teams up with her colourful new friend Gina to unravel the many secrets lurking in the community, tries to get used to the heat in Florida, has lots of drinks, causes several accidents during golf practice, flirts, ruffles feathers, learns to drive a golf cart, and sees far more men in tight shorts than she ever wanted to.

Comical, quirky and fast-paced, Unnatural Causes features sassy senior citizens, one very exasperated rookie detective, an extremely precocious grandson, high-tech appliances and surveillance systems, enough drama and romantic complications to fuel at least one whole daytime TV network, and conversations that will make your head spin with their innuendo, whimsy, and wacky but compelling logic and banter.

If you’re looking for a light-hearted, amusing mystery featuring senior citizens who are anything but boring, do give this one a go. It’s zany, entertaining and engaging, and the cast of characters are crazy in all the best ways, and should please anyone who believes that age is just a number, and that retirement isn’t the end of an active life, but just the beginning of a new chapter.
