Charm to Table by Cleo Frost

My mother has been home for approximately a week and a half. She’s currently out on the lawn in her nightgown at the crack of dawn, counting pixies.

Duskboro is getting ready for the Annual Harvest Festival, and this year it is bigger than ever. After Mari Wardwell wrote an article about the town, Duskboro is experiencing actual tourism, prompting Mayor Blackwood to go all out on the Harvest Festival with lots of stalls, a ferris wheel and a corn maze on a previously unused field. But there is something wrong with the maze. People who enter it disappear, only to show up a day later, claiming they had a wonderful time but failing to remember what actually happened.

Meanwhile, Mari is done house-sitting. Her parents are back home from their summer travels, prompting Mari to reconsider her own plans for the future. Is she going back to Boston, or will she stay in Duskboro with her friends and family, and her new boyfriend? And just how long can the two of them keep their relationship a secret from the nosy townspeople, familiars and random talking animals who all seem to love to keep tabs on everyone?

As the Harvest Festival progresses and the visitor count to the maze rises, Mari has to somehow uncover the secret of the corn maze, deal with all the downsides of sharing a house with her parents while trying to keep her new relationship secret, and fend off an army of pixies insisting on surveying the Wardwell Manor garden, much to the pleasure of Mari’s dad, and the resentment of Mari’s mom and Englebert, the talking familiar cat, who hates pixie dust.

Just like the previous two instalments in the series, Charm to Table is chaotic, hilarious, and whimsical with Mari as a steady anchor in the middle of a spontaneous, eclectic and hectic chain of events involving magic, colourful local characters all with their own secrets and desires, headstrong elementary schoolers, and a wacky and wonderful array of familiars, animals and enchanted creatures dead set on their own private agendas and goals.
