A vampire book collector, a sinister and alluring Fae, a famous detective, dangerous steampunk contraptions, a glamorous cat burglar and a surprise assignment to tutor a distractingly handsome new apprentice. If this doesn’t sound like the perfect recipe for a strange and fabulous adventure, then I don’t know what does.
Irene is a librarian. But she doesn’t work at a library. She works at The Library, allowing her to bypass the passage of time, travel between different alternate worlds to retrieve rare books, and command the Language, essentially using words to influence whichever reality she happens to find herself in. The purpose of The Library is to save rare and important books. Irene’s job is to travel to different worlds to secure them. On easy missions, all she has to do is to walk into a bookshop to buy a book. On difficult missions she faces magical alarm systems, gargoyles and hellhounds. And the mission she is about to go on now will be her most difficult mission yet.
The Invisible Library is a steampunk fantasy adventure with a literary angle, following the exploits of Irene and her colleagues, allies and adversaries, as she hunts for an important version of Grimms’ Fairy Tales in an alternate London afflicted by chaos, causing that particular world’s reality to play out just like the plot of an adventure mystery novel.
Mostly cozy with lots of wry humor, quick-witted banter, and a few gory details, this one is a treat for fantasy and steampunk fans, and for anyone who enjoys genreblending book themed adventures. If you want your stories to be firmly rooted in reality this isn’t one for you. But if you love the fantastical, strange and mythical, I highly recommend this one.
