Ad/PR/Patrocinado. Many thanks to Boldwood Books and NetGalley for this ARC of A Season for Justice by John Pilkington, book 3 in the A Justice Belstrang Mystery trilogy. Publication date today, Aug 17, 2026.
I’m Robert Belstrang, of Thirldon by Worcester: former justice, and in pursuit of the same.
The year is 1618, and a great comet has appeared in the sky, prompting fear and superstition. And retired justice Robert Belstrang is once again called upon by a friend seeking his aid. This time the stakes are higher than ever as Belstrang goes undercover and investigates a suspicious, so-called accidental death in an iron foundry owned by Belstrang’s friend Sir Richard Mountford.
By now it will come as no surprise to the readers that Belstrang gets himself involved in a dangerous case with the odds stacked against him, defying his age and status as a retiree in order to pursue justice, no matter the personal cost or the power and influence of his opponents. Belstrang truly is a defender of justice, and it seems only fitting that this final instalment in the series is the most action-packed, intense, dangerous and satisfying.
The setting is atmospheric and detailed, the mystery is intricate and far-reaching and the characters that Belstrang encounters are varied, multifaceted and memorable. And Belstrang himself is at his most human, showing his strengths, flaws, sympathies, beliefs, and desires clearly and strongly. I am sad to see this series come to an end, but I am pleased to say that this truly was a fitting end to a great series that I highly recommend to any historical mystery fan.
