The Fish and Chip Shop Detectives by Jenny Kane

Everything about Maggie suggested that she had missed her calling. She’d have made a great detective.

Book 1 in The Fish and Chip Shop Detective Agency series. Maggie Tyson loves puzzles and mysteries. Ryan Stepney has just been abandoned by his girlfriend. The two of them meet in the only fish and chip shop in the Cornish village of Mousehole and strike up a friendship despite Maggie being old enough to be Ryan’s mother. When Ryan ends up being a suspect in a case of a suspicious death, Maggie and Ryan join forces to investigate and clear Ryan’s name.

The Fish and Chip Shop Detectives is a seaside cozy mystery with lots of heart. The friendship between Maggie and Ryan is uplifting and comforting, and a testament to the power of empathy, kindness and second chances. The setting is a classic cozy mystery quaint seaside town with dark secrets lurking under the idyllic surface, and the locals are as colourful and quirky as one could wish for in a cozy read.

The fish and chip shop setting combined with a duo who isn’t your usual “best friends since childhood” amateur sleuths is refreshing and heartwarming. Maggie and Ryan both have something the other one lacks, and their different personalities and skills make them a perfect complement to each other and bode very well for their future endeavours, as the two of them realise that they may very well be made for the life of private investigators.
