Murder by the Letter by Lisa Pevey

It was a crazy idea, lacking all business sense and even common sense for that matter. I’d never driven a boat, never been to the swamp or laid eyes on a bayou. But I was ready for a change.

Book 1 in the The Lettering Detective Series.

When Mila Breaux’s rent check bounces and she discovers that she has inherited her late uncle’s houseboat in Louisiana, she decides to move herself and her lettering store to the bayou. What she didn’t realise, was that this move will lead to her having to deal with an aunt who is a murder suspect, a new employee who claims to be able to communicate with animals, a blushing game warden and a houseboat cat.

What follows is a fun, new start in life cozy mystery filled with calligraphy and lettering references, mouthwatering food, quirky and colourful characters and eccentric bayou wisdom and sayings. Lighthearted, delightful and entertaining, the escapades of Mila and her new friend and employee Cherie, known as Critter Girl, and Mila’s aunt Roma, known as Auntie Remoulade, are every bit as amusing and wacky as the names would suggest.

Highly recommended for cozy mystery fans in general, for lettering and calligraphy enthusiasts in particular, and for anyone who has an interest in the Louisiana bayou area, as the setting plays a big part in this story.
