The Bangalore Detectives Club by Harini Nagendra

She could not help but notice things in the world sometimes – patterns and abnormalities. They multiplied and repeated in all directions, like random coordinates on a map, begging somebody – begging her – to make sense of them.

Book 1 in the Bangalore Detectives Club series.

A deeply atmospheric mystery set in Bangalore in the 1920s. Kaveri is a young woman who loves math and murder mysteries, and has recently married Ramu, a doctor at a Bangalore hospital. When the two of them happen to be among the guests at a party at the Century Club that ends up in murder, Kaveri takes it upon herself to investigate, eventually inspiring both Ramu and her new friend and neighbour Uma to join the sleuthing.

What follows is a cozy mystery with serious notes as we experience the highs and lows of life in Bangalore seen through the eyes of Kaveri and Ramu. The Bangalore Detectives Club features cozy mystery mainstays like rich descriptions of food and included recipes, sympathetic main characters, modern values of tolerance and acceptance and no graphic content.

But at the same time Bangalore in the 1920s is a place of conflicts and contradictions between tradition and modernity and the locals and the British, and this story doesn’t shy away from including serious topics like violence against women, racism, colonialism, poverty and discrimination.

If you enjoy historical mysteries with independent, forward-thinking characters who go against the prejudices of their time, and amateur sleuths who stubbornly snoop their way to a solution while doing their best to help the people they encounter on the way, this one is for you. It may not be a realistic depiction of life in Bangalore in the 1920s, but it is entertaining, charming and captivating.
