The killer vanished into the night, leaving behind a scene of panic and a trail of carefully placed breadcrumbs. The game escalated.
Book 1 in the Jack Karver series. Jack Karver is a former NYPD detective. Still troubled by his past which includes a gunshot wound and a lawsuit against his own department, Jack hides his insecurities behind jokes and quips. But when two teenagers are found dead with one of Jack’s old business cards displayed on the bodies, it is clear that Jack has landed himself in a mess no amount of jokes will clear up.
A tense, suspenseful thriller filled with fast-paced action and snappy quips and banter. The story was far more complex than I expected, and the personal development of the main character was very satisfying.
Jack starts out as a loudmouth with a shaky marriage and a closet jam-packed with the skeletons of trauma, denial and regret. But as the story progresses and more details of Jack’s past are revealed, his facade of carefree joker is peeled away, revealing a character who is devoted, caring and principled even when the world around him is burning and ripe with conspiracies, cover-ups and betrayal.
Recommended for readers who enjoy fast-paced, political thrillers with emotional depth and flawed main characters who battle the world around them and their own inner demons at the same time.
