Spelled a variety of different ways, including bogeyman, bogyman, and bogieman, the Boogeyman is a mythical creature most commonly used by adults to frighten children into good behavior.
After graduating from college, horror writer Richard Chizmar returns to his hometown to focus on his fledgling career, only to find the whole town enveloped in its own horror story as it becomes clear to the residents of Edgewood, Maryland, that a serial killer is stalking the streets, targeting pretty young teenage girls.
Part memoir, part small-town horror, part serial killer thriller, Chasing the Boogeyman is presented as a true crime story, complete with photographs and excerpts from interviews and news articles. It is a “this could have happened” story using Chizmar’s own, real memories of his childhood hometown to create a quaint/creepy small-town horror story of how things might have been if a serial killer were on the loose in Edgewood in the late 1980s.
The horror in Chasing the Boogeyman isn’t gory or graphic, the suspense lies in the slowly building paranoia and constant fear that grips the town of Edgewood as time ticks by and the “Boogeyman” serial killer remains on the loose. Recommended for readers who enjoy small-town atmosphere, serial killer mysteries, true crime and immersive storytelling blending fact and fiction for maximum impact.
