“Professor Corlon had been murdered, and she was among the suspects.”
The Catalogued Corpse is a 1920s cozy mystery featuring amateur sleuth Doro Banyon, an American college librarian, feminist and murder mystery enthusiast. As a young woman working at Michaw College, Doro is used to ignoring the ire of the Fearsome Foursome, four male faculty members who despise the idea of any females, students or employees, at “their” precious college. But when one of them is found dead in the library, Doro becomes a suspect and is forced to cooperate with the new campus security officer Everett Mallow who is equal parts infuriating and handsome.
A great free cozy historical mystery with a sympathetic main character, representing the new era of working women after the First World War. The time period and the college campus setting serve as a perfect background for the trials and tribulations of Doro as she assists Mallow on a quest to clear her name, and slowly reconsiders her initial bad impression of the security officer, whose stoic distance seems to be covering unexplored depths.
Highly recommended for readers who enjoy cozy, relaxing historical mysteries with strong, female leads, the 1920s, feminist representation and the classic amateur sleuth/professional investigator dynamic. The Catalogued Corpse is book 1 in the Doro Banyon Historical Mystery series and I got this book for free on Bookfunnel.
