“Family secrets, a celebrity murder, a wrongful conviction, Hollywood drama. It’s got everything.”
An intolerable celebrity actor goes missing, and DI Ryan Hale and his team get a taste of the drama of Hollywood productions with all its lies, deceit, backstabbing, and power plays. At the same time, Ryan is presented with new evidence concerning an old case that could cost him his career, as well as a chilling reminder of the still unsolved mystery concerning his wife’s disappearance twelve years earlier.
Last Take is a great second installment in the DI Ryan Hale Crime Thrillers series. The author ramps up the suspense in book 2, while maintaining the humour and focus on the quirky set of characters that made the first book in the series so interesting. I really enjoyed seeing how these very different characters begin to come together as a team, with each character bringing their own unique skills, flaws and personality to the table. Unconventional, eclectic and alternative, Ryan and his team may be underdogs in many ways, but they are also determined and talented and a force to be reckoned with.
The mystery is fast-paced and intense, the banter and interactions between Ryan and his team are fun and sympathetic, and the atmosphere is contemporary and realistic. A great read if you want a modern police procedural with a lot of heart.
Last Take releases today, January 20th. Many thanks to R.K. Lynott for the ARC.
