Book 4 in The Violet Carlyle Mysteries series.
Violet is depressed after the death of her aunt Agatha and her devoted twin brother Victor is concerned about her mental state. In an attempt to cheer up Violet, the twins agree to spend Christmas with their friends Lila and Denny and their family, as well as Violet’s love interest Jack Wakefield. Violet is thrilled to get the chance to spend time with Jack, and quickly makes friends with Lila’s cousin Kate whose wit and charm soon has Victor under her spell. But when Lila’s cousin Harriet is found murdered after a party, Violet and Lila uncover evidence that Harriet was being pursued by a stalker. Even worse, the stalker shifts their attention to Kate after Harriet’s demise, infuriating Victor and alarming Violet.
A cozy, historical mystery set in 1923. On the surface Violet and Victor are glamorous and frivolous, living an easy life of luxury while writing opprobrious pulp fiction, but in reality the twins are intelligent, conscientious and caring, enjoying the thrills and frills of the roaring twenties while keeping their wits about them as they are chasing a ruthless killer. An enjoyable mystery filled with romance, beautiful dresses, cocktails and parties, and strong female characters who take matters into their own hands and don’t rely on the men around them to save them.
There were a few references to characters and events from earlier books, but it is still possible to read this without any knowledge of the previous books in the series.
