A compelling murder mystery set in an intriguing fantasy world where people and plants are magically altered to be stronger, more productive, more alluring or more deadly.
The story details the first case of Signum Dinios Kol, known as Din. Din is an Imperial engraver, magically enhanced to remember everything he has seen or heard. He works as the eyes and ears of Immunis Anagosa Dolabra, known as Ana, Iudex Investigator of the Daretana Canton.
Brilliant and odd, Ana dislikes people and keeps herself confined in her home, often opting to blindfold herself to decrease the amount of sensory stimulation she has to endure. Brutally honest and completely insensitive to social conventions, Ana takes pleasure in flouting protocols and decorum, mercilessly interrogates people to the point of traumatising them for life, and swears like a sailor.
When a high Imperial officer is found dead in a house belonging to the very rich and influential Haza family, Din and Ana are thrown into a mystery of epic proportions. The Empire they live in is one of great power and resources, but also fraught with corruption and evil and always fighting an often desperate battle to protect its citizens from giant roaming creatures seeking to destroy the protective walls around its lands.
But the outside threats of monsters are not the only danger to Din and Ana. As their investigation unfolds, they become aware of more and more signs of internal perils within the Empire and their own organisation, and Din and Ana both have dark sides of their own past they are keeping hidden. With fascinating characters and an engaging mystery filled with twists and turns, this novel presents a unique twist on a Holmesian murder mystery, perfect for readers who are on the lookout for something new and different.
