Mystery Books with TV Adaptations: Father Brown

Father Brown is a series of 52 short stories by G. K. Chesterton, and an ongoing TV show with 12 seasons. A mild and fairly meek character, Father Brown has been called “the empathetic detective”, quietly solving crimes by identifying with the murderer and understanding their psychology.

The Father Brown TV series is only loosely based on the books. The books take place between 1910 and 1936 in various different locations, while the TV series is set in the 1950s in the fictional village of Kembleford in the Cotswolds. The books are more serious and religiously focused, while TV series is more cozy and light-hearted.

Some of the books and the TV series both feature the thief Flambeau and Inspector Sullivan. The TV series has a wider cast of notable side characters, including Mrs. McCarthy, Lady Felicia Montague, Sid Carter, Bunty, Mrs. Devine, Inspector Mallory and Brenda.
