Hercule Poirot stars in 33 novels and 51 short stories by Agatha Christie, making his first appearance in The Mysterious Affair at Styles, and in the 13 seasons TV series based on the books. One of the greatest and most beloved fictional detectives, Hercule Poirot is famous all over the world, and to many who have watched the TV series, Sir David Suchet is the face of the Belgian detective.
Logical, particular and fussy, Poirot relies on his understanding of psychology and human nature to solve crimes. Motives, alibies, red herrings and the relations between the suspects are always a big part of Poirot’s cases as he slowly connects the dots, using his little grey cells to puzzle out the solution to each case.
Captain Hastings, Inspector Japp and Miss Lemon are recurring characters in some, but far from all of the books and episodes, and Ariadne Oliver makes an appearance in a few of them. The earlier seasons of the TV series are more lighthearted and humorous, the later seasons and darker and moodier.
