Book 1 in the Secret Identity series.
Carmen Valdez has inherited her love of comics from her father. She works as a secretary at Triumph Comics while dreaming of being a comic book writer. When her colleague asks for her help she spies a chance at a break, and together they create a compelling female super hero, The Lynx. But Carmen’s colleague goes behind her back, taking all the credit for their work, and before she can confront him, he is found dead. Desperate to reclaim her comic and shake off the police, Carmen begins investigating on her own, trying to learn who killed her colleague and why. But the more she learns about his past, the more dangerous things become, not just for Carmen but also for those close to her.
A compelling mystery with a main character struggling to carve out a path for herself on more than one front. Carmen not only has to deal with being a young woman in a male dominated industry in the 1970s, she also has to contend with being a lesbian woman who was raised on traditional, conventional Cuban family values of marriage and children, and a child of alcoholic parents.
With so many odds stacked against her, Carmen seems destined to fail. But like her comic book hero The Lynx, Carmen is a woman who believes in justice, and she will fight tooth and nail to save her comic book heroine and herself.
