Mossa is an investigator on Giant, the planet humans have settled on after leaving Earth uninhabitable. She is highly intelligent, deeply enigmatic and somewhat socially inept. Pleiti is her ex girlfriend, a researcher studying ecosystems in the hopes of one day contributing to a safe return to Earth for humanity. When Mossa gets assigned to a case involving a missing person from the university Pleiti works at, the two of them meet again, and Pleiti becomes the Watson to Mossa’s Holmes, assisting Mossa in her investigation and narrating the story to the reader.
A cozy mystery in space. This book is not a sci fi story that includes a murder, it is a mystery that includes a sci fi setting, and a mystery focussing on the relationship between Mossa and Pleiti. It is a portrait of a brilliant investigator, seen through the admiring eyes of an ex girlfriend who still has warm feelings for her former lover, and it is a mystery with a gentle but persistent reminder of the price the planet has to pay for human greed and industry.
