Lusus Naturae by Chris Coppel

When scientists prepare to investigate a sunken ship off the coast of Deal in Kent, they end up salvaging a lot more than they bargained for. The military becomes unvolved, and an unnatural monster is unwittingly let loose after a long hibernation. Fueled by a burning desire for human flesh, the deadly creature stalks the streets, leaving a trail of blood and gore behind it, as it sets out to feed on the unsuspecting residents of the once peaceful seaside town.

What follows is a story of a deadly game of cat and mouse between the military, a group of scientists and a murderous creature spurred on by the lust for feeding on humans.

A fast paced horror/thriller with changing points of view, gory encounters, military conspiracies and a lethal secret that has been kept since the second World War. An entertaining and fluent story, an extremely high stakes situation with a whole town at risk of being devoured, paired with calm and detailed description of scientific endavours and lighthearted banter between the main protagonists makes for a nicely balanced and enjoyable book.

Many thanks to Chris Coppel for the review copy of this book.
